Awards Guide for Antivirus Performance Test (February 2010)

The users can estimate an antivirus performance by a number of objective and subjective characteristics such as the operation system boot-time or file copying time, on-demand scanning performance or the start-up delay as well as their feelings during the work with applications or entertainment programs.

In accordance with the testing methods, we measured a lot of antivirus characteristics influencing the system performance including:

  • Operation system boot-time.
  • Idle CPU & memory usage.
  • File copying speed (on-access scanner).
  • File scanning speed (on-demand scanner).
  • File rescanning speed (on-demand scanner optimization possibilities).
  • Office application boot-time.

It is quite natural that it is impossible to take all these characteristics into consideration while choosing the fastest antivirus. That is why a decision was taken to award the best products in three nominations:

  1. The fastest on-access antivirus scanners.
  2. The fastest on-demand antivirus scanners.
  3. The fastest office application boot-time (the minimum influence on the office applications).

NB! As the test results depend much on the testing stand the grounds for awards were determined directly by the results of analysis (graphic analysis, grouping, the best and the worst results rating).

Platinum Performance Award On-Access Scanning is awarded if the slowdown of the testing collection copy as compared with the system without antivirus does not exceed 20%.

Gold Performance Award On-Access Scanning

Gold Performance Award On-Access Scanning is awarded if the slowdown of the testing collection copy as compared with the system without antivirus is from 20% to 50%.
Silver Performance Award On-Access Scanning

Silver Performance Award On-Access Scanning is awarded if the slowdown of the testing collection copy as compared with the system without antivirus is from 50% to 100%.
Bronze Performance Award On-Access Scanning

Bronze Performance Award On-Access Scanning is awarded if the slowdown of the testing collection copy as compared with the system without antivirus is from 100% to 150%.

If the copying slowdown as compared with the system without antivirus exceeded 150% this antivirus is not awarded.

Gold Performance Award On-Demand Scanning is awarded if the first scanning time does not exceed 6 minutes and there is optimization in the following iterations.

Bronze Performance Award On-Demand Scanning is awarded if the first scanning time does not exceed 10 minutes and/or there is a significant further iteration optimization that does not exceed 6 minutes.

If the file collection copying slowdown exceeds 10 minutes and there is no significant optimization for the further iterations, this antivirus is not awarded. 

Awards for the minimum influence on the office applications

When summing up the results for this nomination, we calculate the total percent of the points awarded for each antivirus from the maximum. So, the boot-time measurements for each of five applications were normalized on a 10-point scale as compared to the worst result.

Thus, the total percent from the maximum possible for each antivirus SUM(AV) was calculated as follows:

SUM(AV) = 100*(n - Uptime(AV)1/WorstUptime1 - Uptime(AV)2/WorstUptime2 ... - Uptime(AV)n/WorstUptimen)/n,

where n is a number of office applications (in our case n=5), Uptime(AV)n is an office application boot time in the system with an installed antivirus and WorstUptimen is the worst boot-time for the same office application among all the antivirus scanners tested.

According to this scheme, an antivirus with the maximum influence on the office applications boot-time will win 0% and the minimum influence will have about 100% of the points.
